Mother Macau
Mae (pronounced "my") means "mother" in Macanese. The Mae Macau Cultural Heritage Project is inspired by Macanese culture, its Portuguese-Chinese ancestry, and its mother region, Macau. Recognizing the pivotal role of the arts in shaping and preserving culture, Mae Macau hosts art exhibits that showcase Macanese culture, heritage, and history through the arts.
Mae Macau exhibits highlight a community, culture, and cuisine that are uniquely Macanese, created by the fusion of Chinese and Portuguese cultures, traditions, and bloodlines over the past 500 years. Featuring artists of both Macanese decent and non-Macanese artists alike, Mae Macau aims to raise awareness of and engagement with Macanese culture. In addition, we hope to shift the perception of Macau as just a gambling capital by bringing to light the long, rich history of the region.
2019
CIQ Gallery of San Francisco, Lusitano Club of California, International Institute of Macau, AGM, and Albergue SCM of Macau, proudly present MAE MACAU.
In November 2019, Mae Macau featured two successful Macanese-inspired art shows, in the U.S. and in China. This was timed to coincide with the Encontro celebration in Macau, and the 20th anniversary of Portugal returning the province of Macau back to China in 1999. The Mae Macau exhibit was a featured event in Macau as part of this extensive week-long, city-wide celebration. The show opened in San Francisco, California in the US on August 11, 2019 and traveled to China to close in Macau on November 29.
2024
We are thrilled to mark Macau's Silver Jubilee in 2024 with new Mae Macau art exhibits in San Francisco August through October! This includes exhibits at CIQ Gallery in San Francisco's Richmond District (a major landing place for the Macanese community during the 20th century diaspora), and at On Waverly in San Francisco's Chinatown (the oldest and largest Chinatown in the U.S). Plans for a possible Macau exhibit in December 2024 are still in the works. Check back for the dates and details coming soon!
